In the framework of collaboration this year, the idea was proposed of establishing a technology incubator for R & D in the fields of design with the support of the chief scientist, and initiating research projects that would serve as a basis for real programs that the city of Eilat could undertake with professional designers and planners. The work of the students will be displayed in an exhibition as part of the Eilat Day celebrations.
Last year, interdisciplinary teams of students from the departments of Graphic Design, Industrial Design and Interior Building & Environment Design met with key officials in the Eilat Municipality and tourism officials. The Mayor of Eilat, Mr. Meir Yitzhak Halevy, outlined his vision of positioning Eilat as a center that provides high-quality service and a unique tourism experience in order to compete with regional tourism challenges.
The students focused on a number of central sites, including: the northern beach, the southern beaches, the beach adjacent to the border crossing with Egypt, one of the old neighborhoods in Eilat, and the commercial Hatmarim Street in the center of the city.
The teams of students developed ideas as a basis for promoting development programs for the city of Eilat in the areas of international and domestic tourism, with an emphasis on building Eilat's image as a city of tourism. The solutions addressed aspects of image, location and signposting in the area of visual communications, road and beach facilities, industrial design, and architectural components and elements related to environmental development.
Under the guidance of a team of lecturers from Shenkar (David Grossman and Saar Friedman from the Department of Graphic Design, Dina Shahar from the Department of Industrial Design, and Gil Nakar from the Department of Interior Building & Environment Design), the students developed proposals that were presented to officials in Eilat.
