The International Board of Governors Dedicated New Shenkar Centers in the Elite and Pernick Buildings – May 2009

Leading international business and industry figures arrived to Israel in May, for the Board of Governor events of Shenkar College of Engineering and Design.  Prominent Israeli members of the International Board of Governors include: Honorary Chairman of the International Board of Governors, architect and businessman, David Azrieli, Chairman of the International Board of Governors, Danna Azrieli, Chairman of the Israeli Friends Committee, Shalom Seidler. David Pernick from the USA, is Life Chancellor of the college.

The main event this year was the dedication of the Elite building, which houses the Multidisciplinary Art Department.

Inauguration of the Elite Building in Ramat Gan

The historic Elite Building, formerly a chocolate factory, has undergone a serious face-lift and today it houses young creative talents - students who are studying in the Department of Multidisciplinary Art at Shenkar.

The inauguration ceremony of both the building and Department of Multidisciplinary Art took place on May 21st , within the framework of the International Board of Governor events.

The event was attended by the Minister for Culture and Sport, Ms. Limor Livnat; Mayor of Ramat Gan, Mr. Zvi Bar; the Chairman of the International Board of Governors, Ms. Danna Azrieli; President of Shenkar, Prof. Amotz Weinberg; and hundreds of friends of Shenkar from Israel and abroad.

Danna Azrieli stated, “In my opinion Shenkar is one of the most exciting art institutions in the world. It succeeds in combining an academic education of the highest order with creative, practical ground-breaking and inter-disciplinary studies. I am proud to be part of this institution. I believe that the establishment of the new broad-based Multidisciplinary Art Department, specifically in the historic Elite Building - found in the tumultuous heart of an urban commercial center- will add an additional dimension of art to the area and to the city of Ramat Gan, and will reposition it as one connected to the heart of contemporary events.”

Prof. Amotz Weinberg praised Zvi Bar, the mayor of Ramat Gan, for his valued activities in the field of education in the city and specifically for the municipality's contribution to the development of Shenkar. Putting the Elite Building in Shenkar's possession, enabled the opening of the new Department of Multidisciplinary Art and will add a colorful and cultural dimension to the center of the city. The Department of Multidisciplinary Art is the only program in the Gush Dan area offering an academic degree in art, training the next generation of creative artists in Israel. Included among the department's instructors are the best of Israel's artists, such as Dani Karavan.

Mayor of Ramat Gan, Zvi Bar noted that the Ramat Gan municipality chose Shenkar as the most worthy and suitable institution to inhabit the landmark building, which was designated for preservation and placed in the public domain. The municipality of Ramat Gan sees the project as part of the environmental development of the area, and aspires to combine the area of the building as part of the public open space surrounding it. The municipality intends to turn the Bourse site and its environs into a young vibrant area during both the day and night. Cooperation with Shenkar is part of the municipality's comprehensive plan to lend the commercial Bourse area, a young and dynamic spirit.

The Lion Brand Store within the Elite Building, generously donated by the Lion Brand Yarn Company, the Orchard Yarn & Thread Company, and the Blumenthal Family was dedicated as well. One of the largest knitting thread manufacturers in the world, the family-owned Lion Brand Yarn company, is headed by David Blumenthal, a member of the US Board of Governors. The company supports textile design students by sending Shenkar an enormous assortment of knitting thread, which is turned into extraordinary knitted works by the students – not only as textiles, but also as ornamentation, apparel and more. In addition, David Blumenthal supports talented Shenkar students by providing merit scholarships.

Also dedicated in the Elite Building was the Joyce L. Stein Silk Screen Workshop – in loving memory of Joyce L. Stein, a fashion merchandiser from New York City. Charles Linz, a trustee of the NAMBS, (National Association of Men’s Sportswear Buyers), and a first time delegate to the Board of Governors unveiled the plaque. Upon his return to the US, he and Myron Sperber on behalf of the foundation committed to the naming of the Computer Room in the Elite Building.

Shenkar centers that were dedicated by the Board of Governors in the Pernick Building included:

The Hedy Goldstein Knitting Laboratory - The Hedy and Davy Goldstein Foundation in Switzerland generously donates funds to Shenkar. Hedy Goldstein was a talented fashion designer who believed in Shenkar. A member of the Board of Governors and an active Chairman of the Swiss Friends of Shenkar, she hosted students and organized numerous events to benefit Shenkar. After her death, Hedy Goldstein bequeathed her entire estate to Shenkar and an endowment fund was established, the profits of which are earmarked for student scholarships. Today many students are able to earn their degrees due to the generosity of Hedy Goldstein.

The Stoll Computer Room - The Stoll Company, founded 135 years ago, is a world leader in manufacturing flat knitting machines. The president of the company, Mr. H.P. Stoll, originally became involved with Shenkar when he donated a CMS 200 electronic flat knitting machine and Apple computer along with the necessary software. That was the start of a close relationship with Shenkar. Over the years the additional machinery, computers and software that were contributed became the backbone of the knitting laboratory used by students for their training and final projects, as well as by Shenkar staff for many R&D projects.
