British Friends of Shenkar College held a unique summer show on September 22nd, at the head office of Marks & Spencer in Central London.

The event displayed the work of 17 third year Shenkar design students, who had been chosen to participate in the BFS Intern program in the UK. They gained valuable work experience as interns at 15 British host companies – among them M & S, Long Tall Sally, I.D. Media and River Island, during the summer months.

M & S Chairman and host of the event, Sir Stuart Rose, spoke of M & S’s dedication to Shenkar. Presentation of a specially prepared poster on natural fibers, was then made to Sir Rose by one of the Visual Communication students, Liron Gilenberg. The poster, which demonstrated the use of natural fibers - in keeping with the “green” theme of the evening, will be displayed in the lobby of M & S and may be used in some of their upcoming “green” promotions.

Another highlight of the event, was a speech by President of Shenkar, Professor Amotz Weinberg, outlining plans for the new expanded campus.

Among the 120 guests were Nadja Swarovski, Carrie Rubin and Alice Morgaine, an eminent fashion and design journalist from Paris, who will lead in the organization of the French Friends of Shenkar. Heartfelt thanks for the warm hospitality received by the students, was given by Reut Korfu, to the British Friends of Shenkar, the host companies, and in particular to Chairman Richard Schiffer, Judy Cohen, Ian Morris, Shoshi Arabas, (the London-based Israeli mother for the students) and Michal Silver, (instrumental in recruiting the leading London design studios to Shenkar’s summer intern program).

Student Reut Korfu, summed up the interns feelings in these words, “Experiencing real work is an inseparable part of the learning experience Shenkar provides for its students, and it would not have been possible without your support. By working alongside the designers and companies, facing suppliers and clients, we have learned how to materialize a visual idea into physical reality. “

This is the 4th year the intern program has taken place in London and due to its outstanding success there are plans to expand the scope of next summer’s program.
